GREAT WIN FOR DOVER

Dover record a magic win to remain top of the league by 7 points full report to follow, well done, Dave C, Tim M, Chris P, Ian R and Paul B.

DOVER REMAIN TOP WITH CLOSE THOUGHT BATTLE!

Dover’s Kent League team managed to keep their place at the top of Division 4 of the Kent League last Wednesday beating a very strong Thanet team on the night 3-2 and a well deserved 17 points.

The Dover team was much changed on the night with late replacements for Liam Marsh (4) missing out due to work commitments and Paul Bowes (1) missing out due to an ankle injury in stood John Waller out of retirement and Chris Penfold to help Dover field a strong 5 players.

John Waller playing at 5 had the task of kick starting the tie on the night Vs Steve Bartlett and with John looking a little loose at the start Steve smelt blood! John managed to ride the early resistance and eventually won the tie reasonably easy 9-4, 9-10, 9-4, 9-4 giving Dover an early lead on the night.

Standing in at number 3 was Chris Penfold Vs the strong Malcolm Syme of Thanet and what a battle we had on our hands here! Malcolm used his experience and court awareness to put Chris on the back foot early in the game to take a 2-0 lead. Fear not as Chris used his fitness and shot selection (and pure grit) to win the tie 3-2 on the night 2-9,4-9,9-4,9-4,10-8 setting Dover on their way with a 2-0 lead.

The tie was on the brink of a Dover win when Tommy Meadows playing at number 2 for the evening was entering the court to play Dave Nolan. Tommy had a tough tie on his hands with Dave usually playing at 1 for Thanet this was going to be a tough ask. But Tommy managed to hang in there with Dave but sheer quality and shot selection from Dave saw Tommy lose the tie 7-9, 9-7, 4-9, 6-9.

The captain of the Dover team Ian Richardson was next on court Vs Dave Berwick who was as they call it on the road a ‘ringer’ and was by trade a squash coach and good player! Ian gave Dave what for in the first game though getting 9 straight points with pure class and accurate drop shots not allowing Dave a sniff. Once the ball had become warm Dave managed to ride the wave and dig out the drops to get the game on level terms. The next two games both players traded blow for blow and eventually Dave dealt the final blow beating Ian in the last game to bring the tie to a 2-2 draw 9-0, 8-10, 9-6, 5-9, 0-9.

Dave Clifford had the not so easy task of winning the match for Dover and making sure that the team hangs onto top stop, but playing Becky wasn’t going to be easy. Luckily for the Dover team Dave was on form and blew away Becky in straight sets 9-2, 9-4, 9-3 to win a fantastic battle for the Dover team who remain top of the league by 4 points!!!!

Far too tight to call but next up Syndale at Home, 25/01/12, First Vs Third!

INTRESTING FACTS!

We all know that January is a month for health kicks and trying to scrape through to pay day but the next 21days at the club are going to be big.

On average there are 120 squash matches still to be played this month by the 5th Feb including:

FIRST ROUND OF THE:
Handicap Competition,
Closed Competition,
Over 40's Competition,

AS WELL AS:
Two Kent League Matches for the Dover Team Vs Thanet & Syndale,

AS WELL AS:
Internal League matches (Remember points mean prizes so play your games)

On average this means that there should be 5.7 games played per day to complete all the above matches.

Good luck to all those involved.

Tommy
